In Europe we work with governments, corporations and the finance sector to drive globally relevant strategies in Europe and from Europe through programs, partnerships and policy advocacy for transformational conservation impact. We manage a portfolio of strategically important conservation work in Europe that contributes to our global conservation agenda and accelerates conservation impact in Asia and the Pacific, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and North America. We work collaboratively and across political aisles, geographic borders and sectors with multiple and diverse stakeholders and decision-makers and are often seen as a trusted advisor and convener in our work with governments, business leaders, individuals and institutions.
TNC is a trusted advisor to several key European government agencies and public funding institutions. We advocate for changes to policy and practice that enable the conservation strategies we have pioneered to become the new ‘business as usual’. Our team manages active government relationships including in the EU, UK, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Spain with the goal of positioning critical policy issue as well as accessing Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) funding towards our global work.
WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
The Senior Attorney will provide legal services on all matters, including complex projects, for assigned European countries and programs. They will provide legal services to advance the conservation objectives of the Europe Region with an emphasis on public funding programs for conservation in Germany, Norway, the UK, and the EU. This position reports to an Associate General Counsel. The Senior Attorney will ensure that that transactions and activities are legally sound and consistent with the Conservancy’s mission, authority, policies, and procedures. They will proactively manage and implement consistent practices to minimize legal risks and have the ability to clearly articulate complex legal concepts and options to assigned programs.

As a Senior Attorney, you will provide high value legal services on complex matters in Europe to advance TNC’s priorities and appropriately manage risk in the region. We are looking for a motivated individual capable of working independently and thinking creatively within highly regulated legal frameworks. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the ongoing mission of conservation by directing and shaping the work of our Legal team in the Europe region.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Juris Doctorate or equivalent from a German university and license to practice law in Germany.
5 years relevant legal experience or at least 3 years relevant legal experience coupled with assumption of significant responsibilities for a geographic area or subject matter expertise.
Experience with European public funding entities.
Experience negotiating complex transactions and agreements.
German and English written and verbal communication skills.
Authorized to work in Germany or Belgium.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Multi-cultural experience appreciated.
Fluency in French.
In-house experience and/or law firm experience advising sophisticated clients and senior management.
Experience developing, directing, and managing multiple projects and implementing strategic program goals.

SALARY INFORMATION
This position may be based Germany or Belgium. The starting pay ranges will be in local currency and based on the local labor market, location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment and used to determine your actual pay range. Additionally, for all applicants, actual pay will fall within a range based on a variety of factors including, for example, the candidate’s qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
